If you are concerned about the steady loss of heritage buildings in Hamilton, you can apply to join the committee charged with trying to protect historically significant properties. The city is currently advertising to fill four empty seats on the Local Architectural Conservation Advisory Committee.
LACAC advises city council on buildings and districts for heritage designation, heritage permits, and other cultural heritage matters, including the designation of lands as natural heritage sites. It recently played a role in delaying further demolition work on the Tivoli Theatre complex.
LACACs are established under provincial heritage legislation. New proposals from the McGuinty government will give municipalities the right to prevent the demolition of heritage sites.
