Horwath Wants East End Air Monitoring Station
September 1, 2005

Hamilton East MPP Andrea Horwath is calling on the provincial government to re-establish an air quality monitoring station in the east end of the city. Pointing to the Liberal government's promise to reduce air pollution, Horwath says "the most meaningful first step they can take is to reopen Hamilton's East End Monitoring Station."

Hamilton currently has provincial monitoring stations serving the downtown, west end and mountain sections of the city. An east end station at Kentley and Nash was shut down by the Mike Harris government in the summer of 1996 as a result of budget cuts to the Ministry of the Environment.

Last month city council was told that the Ministry is still receiving some east Hamilton air data from monitoring stations run by private companies, but this information is not available to the public. Horwath says that the government "can't be serious about fighting pollution if it doesn't have a public monitoring station in such an obvious hot spot, relying instead on sketchy information from private and unaccountable sources."
