Concern over waiving rental fees
October 4, 2006
Council agreed last week to waive fees of $4,642 from the Glanbrook Rangers Junior Hockey Club for the use of the Glanbrook Arena mezzanine “for a total of 30 occasions, 5 hours per night, and to hold occasional ‘Blue Line Nights' during their scheduled hockey games”. The resolution was opposed by Tom Jackson who said the group was an “excellent organization” but “they're a privately owned club and this shouldn't be allowed.”
The waiver request was defeated in a tie vote in early September when it came before council's grants subcommittee, but was resurrected by Dave Mitchell at the corporate administration committee of September 20. That committee agreed to the free ride when it was explained that the cost would only be borne by Glanbrook taxpayers. Prior to amalgamation, the hockey club got the arena free, even though they sold alcohol.
Chad Collins suggested that there be a consistent city-wide policy. “ If similar requests come forward (to the committee) between now and when the policy comes forward, then we need to treat all the other clubs in the same fashion.”
