Ontario’s environmental commissioner, Gord Miller, will address a public forum on the future of the Great Lakes this week at Hamilton City Hall. He will be joined by Rick Findlay of Pollution Probe in the council chambers at 6 pm on Tuesday evening.

The official inauguration of Hamilton’s new mayor and council will take place on Wednesday evening in the convention centre starting at 7 pm.

Next Sunday is international human rights day and is being marked by the local branch of Amnesty International with a 3 pm public meeting at city hall on the “Torture of Innocents and the War on Terror”. The speaker is Abdullah Almalki, a Canadian who helped Afghan refugees and was arrested and tortured in Syria, apparently with the involvement of Canadian authorities.

Co-sponsoring organizations include McMaster Centre for Peace Studies, Gandhi Peace Foundation, OPIRG, Children's International Learning Centre, Hamilton Mundialization Committee. Hamilton Project Ploughshares, Hamilton Culture of Peace Network, Physicians for Global Survival and the UN Association of Canada.
